CoadeCoade Stone Model of Mounted Tiger Head
About the Item
Tiger or possibly a lioness, modelled after an 18th century original by 'Coade' Manufactory.
Shown head only, mounted on a plinth. Looks fantastic within an interior setting.
In Chinese mythology, the tiger represents the greatest of earthly power and protection over humans. It chases away three disasters, namely fire, thieves and ghosts. The ancient Chinese believed that tigers turned white after they lived for five centuries and that they could actually live for an entire millennium.
In the 18th century, classical art and architecture was influenced by the Greek and Roman cultures. In Greek mythology Dionysus (the god of wine and pleasure) is depicted mounted on a panther.
In the earliest of figurative Greek art, lionesses take centre stage, often flanked the Gorgon, symbolising power and strength.
We are not quite sure whether the Coade cat is a tiger, panther or a lioness?
Regardless of the exact classification, these dignified animals symbolise courage, strength and majesty.
