About the Item
Bronze cast mask, created by casting decorative escutcheons used in furniture at the turn the 19th century, and combining them into a mask that challenges both traditional ideas of tribal masks and popular stylized Japanese contemporary drawing styles. The shadows are an interesting aspect of the installation.
There are three other pieces in the series, cast in red, green, white and black.
Bronze sculptor Dale Dunning’s skilled craftsmanship never overshadows the story he wants to tell. Often he presents new ways of looking at the human face – sometimes as a mask, other times brimming with words and thoughts – and always compelling, sacred and narrative. He holds a MFA (1971) from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. Dunning has exhibited across Canada and his work is held in a number of corporate and national collections.
The work is created in an edition of 7 plus artist proof. This is the artist proof.

Dale Dunning
Dale Dunning holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. While earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Mt. Allison University, NB, he studied under Lawren P. Harris. This academic training is reflected in Dunning’s approach to his work. Early on, he decided to focus on the human head and the mask. Inspired by the Gothic and Classical periods of “Grotesque” art, his work often reflects a romantic sensibility. His sculptures may recall the Gothic literature of Mary Shelley or historical novels of Alexandre Dumas. "The head is universally recognized, easy to identify with. We live in our heads, see, feel, and experience the world in our head. It serves as the foundation upon which I can develop various paths to explore." ~ Dale Dunning Dunning explores a variety of materials – bronze and aluminum casting, welded screws and wrenches, typeset, cable – all in the interest of creating the form. In 2012, Dunning’s work was chosen to illustrate an entire volume of Dacritics, a journal of linguistic criticism published by Johns Hopkins University Press. Dunning has exhibited across Canada and his work is held in private, corporate and public collections including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Robert McLaughlin Gallery, McIntosh Gallery at Western University, Carleton University Art Collection, and the National Library of Canada.

Spirit of Gravity - emotive, nude, female, figurative, bronze statuette
By Richard Tosczak
Located in Bloomfield, ON
In this thoughtful sculpture by Canadian artist Richard Tosczak, the gestures of a female figure, head bent, arms wrapped, are captured in bronze. Known for his beautiful figurative work, this piece retains the artist’s signature highly textured appearance and green-black patina. Tosczak’s pieces are first conceived on paper in quick pen and ink drawings. The spontaneity of this approach is evident in the almost abstract appearance of the sculpture. This piece is number three in an edition of eight.
“The ineffable, vital qualities of the human spirit (is what I’m trying to communicate.)” - Richard Tosczak
Born in Belgium, Richard Tosczak studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Further studies were pursued in France with another internationally acclaimed classic sculptor, Martine Vaugel...
