About the Item
Dana Bloom's Measurement features a gilded human figure that challenges the viewers' perception of presence and absence, while exuding a dreamlike, timeless quality that is simultaneously suggestive of monumentality and ethereality. The thin gold foil outlines a partial silhouette of a female body, inviting the viewers to complete it in their mind: an emaciated figure representing the trace of someone who was once present but is no longer there. Like a reptile shedding its old skin to accommodate its expanding body - a painful and dangerous process necessary for growth - Bloom's human shell symbolizes life's transformative nature and its power to defy death. By blurring the boundaries between presence and absence, Bloom offers an alternative understanding of their interconnected existence within a single body. The art work is curectnly presented at the Tel Aviv Biennale and is offered for sale once the Biennale ends in November 2023. The current Biennale, whose chosen theme is “What Is the Measure of Man?” focuses on the human condition at the threshold of a new age. The Biennale examines the different circles that surround us, and our power to impact the future of the place in which we live. This year, in the spirit of the Biennale’s global theme, some 250 works by prominent Israeli artists are presented alongside a selection of craft and design works by international artists responding to ancient cultures and traditions.
