About the Item

2 of 2 patinated bronze animal sculptures of a pair of African elephants at play by Dinah Neill, 2022. Dinah Neill trained in fine art and graduated with a B.A. from Manchester Polytechnic in 1986. More recently she was awarded a degree in the philosophy of art from the University of Manchester. Since then Dinah has taught painting and drawing at Macclesfield College. As well as being an accomplished artist, Dinah has also been fascinated by wildlife. In 2000 she made a trip to Kenya which included a visit to the Daphne Sheldrick orphanage for baby elephants, which she has supported for many years. Inspired by the grace and majesty of these wild but sensitive and gentle animals, she embarked upon making a series of drawings and sculptures ( in clay ) based on her observations and direct experiences with these orphaned elephants which are being cared for in captivity until they are eventually integrated into their wild herds. Exceptionally, Dinah has produced this beautiful bronze pair piece and as with her clay series, Dinah has captured the spirit and grace of these magnificent and highly intelligent creatures who are never for a moment static though they are often portrayed as such. There is something in her sculptures ( perhaps bordering on the spiritual ) that seems to have captured the essence of the elephants' gentle nature, playfulness and vulnerability. Dinah simulates the texture of the elephants' hide beautifully with her thumb impressions, originally in crank clay. This particular piece depicts a pair of African elephants as one tries to playfully snuggle into the other. The movement in this piece is wonderful and is further enhanced by the fact that the elephants can be positioned slightly differently by the viewer. A sculpture that truly captivates viewed from all angles.

Large Neapolitan 19th Century Hardwood Sculpture of a Crèche Camel.
Located in Cotignac, FR
Large, Neapolitan, late 19th Century hardwood sculpture of a camel. Artist unknown. A beautifully patinated hardwood sculpture. The sculpture is extremely charming and having been handled for over a century has a lovely warm and tactile patina. It is particularly nice too see the work of the craftsperson in the adze and chisel marks along the body of the sculpture. The Italians and most notably the area around Naples has a long and storied tradition in the creation of sculptures for Nativity Scenes. This camel is both an endearing item and a piece of social history. A wonderful addition in its own right to the traditional Christmas scene, by tradition this sculpture was used as a maquette for the production of papier-maché models used in Christmas Creches which have such a long tradition in Italy and throughout the world. Wonderfully carved this piece was used to create hollow models out of papier-maché which were more affordable for this Christmas tradition. Hundreds of strips of papier-maché would be layered onto the figure in all directions. Then using a sharp tool the papier-maché was pushed into all the crevices of the sculpture to give it crisp detail. Once the layers of paper were dry the papier-maché was cut at certain points and lifted off the sculpture. Then finally the resulting body parts were glued back together, painted and patinated ready to be placed in the crèche scene. In the Christian tradition, a nativity scene (also known as a manger scene...

This delightful bronze sculpture of a walking baby elephant is highly textured and finished with an elegant sepia patina. Canadian sculptor Richard Tosczak begins his pieces with rapid pen and ink studies that evolve into dynamic three-dimensional figurative works cast in bronze. This is number 3 in an edition of 8. “I have always liked sculptures of Ganesh (elephant-headed Hindu god of beginnings) and have thought about making images of baby elephants for years. The baby elephant, for me, symbolizes creativity and the importance of pursuing one’s truest life.” Richard Tosczak Born in Belgium, Richard Tosczak studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Further studies were pursued in France with another internationally acclaimed classic sculptor, Martine Vaugel...
