Donato Barcaglia (Pavia, January 10, 1849 - Rome, 1930) Little girl with clasped hands Statuary white marble sculpture Measurements: height 55 cm, width 39 cm, depth 25 cm Last Quarter 19th Century Signed "D.BARCAGLIA" Work known to us in a single copy Biography: Born into a particularly large family, Donato Barcaglia undertook literary and later artistic studies partly thanks to the financial support of his father, a modest government employee. He attended the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, taking courses in drawing and nude painting; his sculpture teacher was Abbondio Sangiorgio. As early as the 1860s, he succeeded in establishing himself as a portrait painter, devoting himself to sculpture only from the following decade, gaining important recognition. Just seventeen years old, he had already enjoyed good success when his first work, Il vendemmiatore, later placed in the Royal Palace in Milan, was purchased by the Society of Fine Arts in 1866 at the behest of Prince Umberto. He reached full stardom by the age of twenty-five; he was rich by the time he was thirty, when he took over a major atelier from which many of his works were brought to market and directed to all parts of the world. He collected important awards at the World Expositions in Vienna (1873) and Philadelphia (1876). He was particularly active in the production of public and official monuments, as well as funerary and commemorative monuments; several of his sculptures can also be found at Milan's Monumental Cemetery and Gravedona Cemetery on Lake Como. He was appointed Grand Officer of the Order of the Crown of Italy and Knight of the Legion of Honor. He died in Rome in 1930 and was brought back to Milan for burial in the Monumental Cemetery.
