Doris Warner
Venus, Modern Abstract Figurative Sculpture #37

1975

About the Item

Wonderful small scale abstract figurative stone Venus sculpture by Doris Ann Warner (American, 1925-2010), 1975. A highly abstracted female form is expressed through the organic, flowing lines that make up this biomorphic form, which has a soft yet solid dimensionality that changes interestingly when viewed from different angles. The sculpture is carved from sedimentary sandstone and is fixed to a solid wood rectangular base. Signed and dated "Warner 6/75" and numbered #37 on underside of wood base. Overall measurements (stone sculpture + base): 11"H x 3.75"W x 3.75"D Stone sculpture without base measures 8.75"H x 3.25"W x 2.25"D Wood base measures 2.25"H x 3.75"W x 3.75"D First achieving recognition as an abstract expressionist painter, Doris Warner discovered the world of stone carving and returned to the university for instruction in sculpting the three dimensional form. A journey to Pietra Santa, Italy, (The Mecca of sculptors), gave her a month with the Italian professor, Pasquale Martini, experiencing the Italian method of stone carving. She returned with three tons of marble and worked exclusively in that medium. The impressions and images gathered from extensive travel in Europe, Asia and Africa have inspired recent works. One of the architectural wonders of the world, The Great Stupa of Borabudur, Java, was the source of inspiration for a series of five sculptures. The five sculptures are not intended to be specifically architectonic in form and yet there is an unequivocal sense of history – frozen in time. The mysterious quality of the temple carvings are translated into bronze icons (lost-wax process) and placed on the carved marble. In addition, Doris focuses on abstracted female figures which emphasize body movement through rhythmic flow of mass and line. She usually sculpted in a series, reworking the same concept until it has been expressed as powerfully as possible.
