About the Item

Neoclassical Carrara marble bust depicting Asteria, signed on the back "Wiliam Physick sculpt." for Edward William Physick. Edward William Physick (1774-1862) was an English sculptor originally from Cornwall. In 1810 he began exhibiting at the Royal Academy and continued regularly until 1842. Between 1824 and 1838 he also exhibited at the British Institution. Although most of his exhibited works appear to be portrait busts, he also executed fine female busts in mythological taste, ideal subjects such as The Separation of Hector and Andromache (1824) and St. John the Baptist Preaching in the Desert (1832), as well as several religious monuments dating from the 1820s-1840s scattered in London churches. He lived from 1810 to 1824 at 23 Spring Street, Portman Square, and later at 16 Park Terrace, Regent's Park. He is buried in Kensal Green Cemetery. Most of his works are state-owned. Asteria is a character from Greek mythology: Titan, daughter of Ceos and Phoebe, sister of Leto; according to the most popular version of the myth, wife of Perse and mother of Hecate. Literary tradition identifies Asteria with the island of Delos: to escape Zeus, it was transformed into an island wandering among the waves. Very good condition, never restored.
