Ernst Barlach
Ernst Barlach Bronze Skulpture "Der Raecher" ( The Avenger ), 1914

1914

$265,994.15

About the Item

Bronze, brown patinated by Ernst Barlach ( 1870 - 1938 ) Inscribed and numbered on the plinth: E. Barlach 8/8. Stamped with the foundry mark: H.Noack.Berlin. Dimensions: Width: 23.23 in ( 59 cm ), Height: 17.72 in ( 45 cm ). Provenance: Alfred Flechtheim. The Avenger is one of Barlach's most celebrated sculptures and has become regarded as one of the most compelling symbols of the German Expressionist Movement. The dynamic sculpture is a symbol of the war and the dissatisfaction with the political, economical and social conditions at that time. The powerful scene of a warrior striding forward and holding an enormous sword over his back accentuates the expressive language and the aggressivity of Barlach’s work.
