About the Item

Erte, Russian (1892 - 1989) Bronze Sculpture "Amazon" Circa 1985, Edition #118 of 375 Size: 18 in. x 26 in. A striking limited edition cold painted Art Deco bronze figure of a beautiful female Amazonian warrior riding upon a very stylised horse, signed Erté, numbered 118/375, dated 1985 and with foundry mark. Erte Process of producing a bronze: First, the artist models the sculpture in clay. A plaster mold of the model is made, from which a plaster cast is produced and the details are refined. After the plaster cast has been carefully checked to be sure that it is accurate, and final changes have been made, a flexible rubber mold is made from the plaster. This mold enables every detail to be captured. Molten wax is poured into the rubber mold, producing a faithful wax casting of the sculpture. This casting is then checked for detail and cleaned up, following which the wax cast is dipped into a bath of liquid ceramic to produce another mold. After several days, when the ceramic mold is dry, it is heated to melt the wax, which runs out through openings in the mold, leaving a cavity in its place (Hence the term lost wax). The mold is then fired in a kiln to bake the ceramic to a high degree of hardness. The final casting made by pour molten bronze into the cavity. When the bronze has cooled, the ceramic mould is carefully broken away, revealing the bronze sculpture within. Then the piece is sandblasted and chased to clean it up and removed imperfections. Finally, the sculpture is treated with chemicals and heat to achieve the desired patinas. Romain de Tirtoff (23 November 1892 – 21 April 1990), known later as Erte, was born in St. Petersburg Russia in 1892. The only son of an admiral in the Imperial Fleet, he was raised amidst Russia’s social elite. As a young boy, the Persian miniatures he found in his father’s library fascinated him. These exotic, brightly patterned designs continued to be important to him and influenced the development of his style. He moved to Paris at the age of eighteen and took the name Erte, from the French pronunciation of his initials. In 1915 he began a relationship with Harper’s Bazaar, during which time he created over 240 covers for the magazine. His fashion designs also appeared in many other publications, making him one of the most widely recognized artists of the 1920’s. He designed costumes and sets for the theater, as well as limited edition prints, bronzes, and wearable arts. In 1976 the French government awarded Erte the title of Officer of the Arts and Letters, and in 1982 the Medaille de Vermeil de la Ville de Paris was bestowed upon him. Erte’s work has exhibited in prominent museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum in California, the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England. Erte is credited as the originator of the Art Deco Movement, and his designs are still widely recognized today.

Ting Shao Kuang (1939, Chengdu, China) "Huntress" Limited Edition Bronze Sculpture, 1990. Edition NUMBER 99/250. Signed on base. 19.5" H x 12"W 49.53 x 30.48 cm Ting Shao Kuang was born in 1939, in Chenggu, a small village located in the Northern province of Shanxi, China. His earliest childhood was marked by the horrors of the Sino-Japanese war that destroyed his land and left him abandoned after the evacuation of his parents to Taiwan. He found his consolation and escape in painting and by the age of 11, he painted on a daily basis, using the cooking oil as a medium for the pigment. Even besides his limited supplies, Ting Shao Kuang managed to use his extraordinary talent and got the opportunity to attend a prestigious high school which was connected with the Beijing’s Central Academy of Arts and Crafts where he later gained his further education. His painting lessons were based on rules of Social Realism without freedom of expression and with the strict prohibition of any foreign influences. After graduation in 1962, Kuang obtained a position to teach at the Yunnan Art Institute in Kunming. Painting the unacceptable abstract paintings during the night, he would destroy every piece of them in the morning, fearing of the arrestment of the authorities of the country. Still, Ting Shao Kuang’s progressive and modern vision did not fail to attract the attention and he was suspended from his work and escaped to northern China, finding the refuge in Buddhist monasteries in Gansu where he studied ancient sculpture and cave paintings on the old Silk Route which had been preserved for centuries. Using the distinctive technique, Ting Shao Kuang’s work combines traditional Chinese influences with the Western art forms. Always turning to the female characters as his favorite subjects, their sophisticated shapes have been created from the artist’s deepest feelings and literature that inspired him. After the death of Mao, Kuang and his colleagues founded the famous Yunnan Shen She Art...
