About the Item

FERDINANDO VICHI (Florence, 1875 - 1941) Macaques, circa 1910 bronze, height 32 cm Signed at the base "F.Vichi" Bibliography: Renato Brozzi and Italian animalist sculpture between the 19th and 20th centuries, exhibition cat. edited by A.Mavilla and A.Panzetta, Edifir, Florence, 2020 Exhibitions: Renato Brozzi and Italian animalist sculpture between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Traversetolo, Parma, Renato Brozzi Museum, 7 November 2020 - 30 May 2021 The Florentine sculptor Ferdinando Vichi was very famous and appreciated. His compositions are varied in subject matter, from busts after antique themes to Orientalist themes and Renaissance-inspired models. Like many other sculptors of the late nineteenth century, Vichi often drew inspiration from classical antiquity. Historicizing Romantic subjects were very popular in Italian sculpture of the late 19th century. He also made sculptures with animalier subjects. The sculptor's sensitivity allows him to convey the pride and serenity of the macaque mother as she feeds her baby. The yield of the composure and elegance of the monkey is extraordinary. Vichi was a central figure in the production of Florentine sculpture at the end of the 19th century. He is associated with the sculptors Cesare Lapini, Pietro Bazzanti and Guglielmo Pugi, all of whom have executed works at the Bazzanti Gallery. The gallery, originally Bazzanti's studio, was inaugurated in 1822 and can still be visited today. Shipping will be arranged by our Gallery or 1stDibs.
