Ferdinand Barbédienne (August 6, 1810 - March 21, 1892) was a French metal worker and manufacturer who was well known as the founder of the largest bronze statue casting company. The son of a small farmer from Calvados, he began his career as a dealer in wallpaper in Paris. In 1838 he entered into partnership with Achille Calla (1795-1859), who had invented a machine to create miniature bronze replicas of statues. Together they started a business selling miniature copies of antique statues from museums throughout Europe, thus democratizing art and making it more accessible to households. From 1843 they expanded their scope, casting works by living artists as well as diversified into enameled household items. Among the major artists who cast their sculptures at Barbedienne were Antoine Louis Bari and Auguste Rodin.
