Copyright Washington National Cathedral- Commissioned as a part of The Creation Sculptures at Washington National Cathedral. Limited Edition Bronze authorized by Washington National Cathedral. “I saw Ex Nihilo (Out of Nothing), the center portal arch, as a single expression of Creation, as the metamorphosis of divine spirit and energy. The figures emerge from the nothingness of chaos, caught in the moment of eternal transformation – the majesty and mystery of divine force in a state of becoming.” – Frederick Hart The Working Model, one third the full-scale Ex Nihilo, was never exhibited until the Frederick Hart Memorial Service at Washington National Cathedral in 2000. It literally was locked away in the archives of the Cathedral since its creation. The Working Model was the final model before Hart brought the work up to full scale and therefore represents a unique view of this most monumental piece. The Working Model, after it was used to cast these works, was again locked away in the archives of Washington National Cathedral. This piece is Rare and precious. Her twelve nieces and nephews are the primary source of her inspiration, though DeDecker’s sculptures are not portraits. In fact, her loose style leaves her viewers with room for interpretation, so as to see their own lives within her sculptures. This imprecision, combined with her unique ability to capture specific moments to which each viewer can relate on a personal level, regardless of age, give DeDecker’s work a timeless quality that spans generations. DeDecker began her artistic training as a painter at the University of Northern Colorado, until a professor, noticing her joy in the portrayal of shapes and forms, suggested she try her hand at sculpture...
