About the Item

Kimiko by Gary Alsum Bronze ed/7, 54x19x20", comes with 3" high, 24" diameter sandstone round base as pictured in the garden images. Young woman in traditional attire holding an fan. Ideal scale for a garden setting. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Taking the knowledge passed on from artists such as Fritz White, Glenna Goodacre & George Lundeen; Gary feeds into his bronze sculptures his own experiences and history. The child-at-play & sport motifs capture the Spirit of America. “The challenge of sculpture is depicting the movement and energy of a single moment. The central theme of my work is celebrating the gift of life. Most of my work in the last few years has been commissioned. I enjoy the challenge of combining the client’s vision and needs with my own ideas to create lasting depictions of significant memories in their lives. Although I am open to considering many concepts involving the human figure, I am particularly drawn to capturing subjects in motion. Movement, after all, is what captures our attention. Children at play and athletes in motion are my favorite subjects because of the passion for life they demonstrate. It is a constant challenge to capture these qualities in bronze and pass that on to the viewer. When developing each new sculpture my primary concern is artistic integrity."

  • THE LAST DAYS OF NAPOLÉON BY
    Located in New Orleans, LA
This highly evocative bronze by Vincenzo Vela captures the deposed Emperor Napoléon on his deathbed, holding a map of Europe and lost in thought about what might have been. Remarkable among most portrayals of the exiled leader, this highly detailed sculpture depicts Napoléon at his most vulnerable. Nonetheless, Vela perfectly captures his still-heroic bearing, which imparts to this work a monumental quality and quiet dignity. The mate to this figure is the colossal marble at the Musée du Château de Malmaison, which was shown at the Paris Salon of 1867. The founder of the verismo movement in Italy, Vela was one of the great exponents of realism in sculpture. Born in Ligornetto, Switzerland in 1820, he studied under celebrated sculptor, Benedetto Cacciatori. He was also influenced both by the work of Tuscan sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini, who seamlessly combined neoclassicism with naturalism and the romantic painting of Francesco Hayez...
