When children play together, there has always been a leader to lead the rules of games among children. Such a kid is like a head sheep in a flock and a wolf leader of a pack, as well as a “Top dog” in a group of children. A top dog is usually a soundless outsider who watches other kids as they play. He / she may find a silent corner to enjoy being alone but he/she never feels lonely inside his/her mind.

Chinese artist Huang Yulong studied porcelain art in Jingdezhen, China, an important historical town of Chinese porcelain productions. His life is deeply influenced by hip-hop and street art, which inspired him to create a fusion art style by Chinese traditional cultures and hip-pop culture. Freedom and rebellion represented by hiphop have become Huang Yulong's motivation to pursue his art career, which deliver profound philosophical and aesthetic concepts of Chinese art to people all over the world without language, genders, races and geographical barriers.

As shown in the artistic sculptures I created, it combines diversified elements, but each shape is a manifestation of the core of pure Chinese Eastern culture." by Huang Yu Long ( a quote from the interview with MEFine).
The core value of Huang Yu Long’s sculptures expresses Yin and Yang, a concept of dualism that two opposite powers may be interconnected in order to achieve a balance status. “Yo Bro！” and “Upside Down” highlight a harmonic physical contact between two different persons. Huang Yu Long stated that “Everything is just like Tai Chi and everyone is involved in the Yin/Yang cycle.”
Dualism is also applied in “N.S.E.W” , “Heaven and Earth” and “Party” series that represent interconnections between Chinese cultures and Hiphop spirit. In addition, “Rose” series, “Skull” series and “Snowflakes” reflects ugly facts under beautiful surfaces. He also extended the view to his life journey of being an artist. “Top Dog” , “Beginner’s Mind” , “Godfather” and “ Be My Side” which visualise his passions and struggles as an artist and remind himself the reason becoming an artist.
“I poured all my personal emotions into this sweater-wearing character. In order not to affect the temperament with more information, I subtracted the character's face and completed the character with a jumpsuit and hoodie. Because of the characters I create, I use their actions and gestures to suggest a particular state and a power expressed by the characters themselves.” ~ Huang Yulong

Huang Yulong
Huang Yulong was born in 1983 in Anhui Province, China. In 2007 he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute in Jiangxi Province. As one of the new generation of Chinese artists and part of the ‘post-80s generation’ and ‘only child’ generation, Huang is strongly influenced by the phenomenon of foreign culture in China, which he combines with his fascination with pottery and the material world. Huang is best known for his sculptures of Buddhas in hoodies, displaying an exchange of Eastern tradition and Western contemporary style. He was selected by “Complex” as “25 Contemporary Chinese Artists You Need to Know” in 2013. His sculptures have been exhibited at Niubi Newbie Kids II, at Schoeni Gallery, Hong Kong; “Zeitgeist” Huang Yulong’s Solo Exhibition at Himalayas Art Museum, Shanghai, China; Chinese Artist / Marseille Artist at Marseilles, France; The 4th International Contemporary Art Exhibition at Gwangju Biennale Korea, Art Beijing Art Fair at Beijing, China and etc. He also held his first solo exhibition “NULL” in Hong Kong in 2015.
