About the Item

Jorge,Alaskan Cedar, Found Materials, Acrylic Paint, Epoxy, 14 x 11 x 5 Inches, is one of an extensive series of intricately carved portrait heads in wood and paint by an artist who fully understands the importance of personality, nuance, direct expression, and intensity of focus. Ranging in height from 8 inches to 14 feet, there’s a directness to Brubaker’s wood carvings of portrait heads and figures which touches on aspects of American Folk Art, but the subtleties and range of emotions expressed are most certainly the work of a highly sophisticated and well trained artist. Joe Brubaker has compared his “artistic journey” to “driving on a winding road I’m familiar with, but at midnight with no headlights on.” Considering the clear confidence he demonstrates in the execution of these extraordinary and delightful wood sculptures, one can only imagine it’s the risk of destruction that would cause Brubaker to be anxious - with their intricate attention to detail, paint and assemblage, they appear effortless in the manner of all great works of art but we know they are not. Joe Brubaker graduated from Sacramento State University in 1975 and received an M.F.A from UCLA in 1980. His work has been exhibited primarily in California, in over 23 solo gallery exhibitions and over 20 gallery group shows, and in museum exhibitions and projects at the San Francisco Museum of Craft and Design, the Palo Alto Art Center, the Cannon Art Center, the Bakersfield Art Museum, and numerous “Exquisite Garden Collective Art Installations” in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and in California in Campovida, Oakland, Carlsbad, and Hopland. Joe Brubaker is the recipient of a Marin Arts Council Grant and a Full Fellowship Award from the Vermont Studio Center and has taught extensively in the San Francisco Bay area and in Los Angeles. His works are in numerous private collections. Joe Brubaker has been represented by the Beth Urdang Gallery since 2004.

Wendy Letven's brilliantly colored abstract wall sculptures and freestanding pieces of painted aluminum are an exciting addition to genres which the artist has extraordinarily reinvigorated with forms that are playful, elegant, sophisticated and unique. Extending approximately 4 - 8 inches from the wall, reflected shadows can also be a marvelous aspect of Letven's works. Occasional and subtle scientific references ( molecules, atoms, astronomy, physics) add gravitas and intellectual weight to works that are pure visual delights - humorous, quite complex and intricate, wildly colorful (or more subdued in black, white and/or silver). Natural is equally influential. Working in sizes as small as 10" high to 10' long, there is an enormous range of possibilities with Letven's sculptures as pedestal and shelf pieces, freestanding works, and very large commissions adaptable to both walls and huge spaces for interior and/or exterior sites: Wendy Letven "Crystal Cloud...

  • "Sgt. Pepper Jack" British Flag Union Jack Contemporary Minimal Bright Oil Paint
    By Charlotte Andry Gibbs
    Located in Wellesley, MA
"Sgt. Pepper Jack," Acrylic on Linen 20 x 40 Inches Charlotte Gibbs’ "flag" and "star" paintings often reference the artist's interest in Pop art and sometimes incorporate 23 karat gold leaf in addition to oil paint, but not always. With its depiction of a graphically idealized British flag and obvious reference to the Beatles, "Sgt. Pepper Jack" is at once lovely and Pop. Beautifully painted and exquisitely executed, these elegant works of rich color are sophisticated examples of Gibbs' ability to invoke whimsy and can be read equally as pure geometric abstraction, and the artist's simple slightly distressed white wood frames are the perfect complement . Also available are "Union Jack...

  • Night Shift
    By Guillaume Lachapelle
    Located in Montreal, Quebec
Text by Terence Sharpe There is a moment in Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris (1972) when the character Hari commits suicide by drinking liquid oxygen. As she is not actually a human, but an artificial hybrid product of the mysterious planet and the protagonists’ memories, she heals rapidly and is alive again minutes later. Her choice to take her own life is poignant, seemingly the action of a being becoming aware of its hopeless infinitude. Her realization that while the men will die on the space station or elsewhere, her existence is that of immortality, a deeply alienating notion that causes her to seek her own destruction. The Montreal artist Guillaume Lachapelle has one work that prompts a sense of eternal alienation that echoes Hari’s tragedy. The work greets the viewer with a empty doorway flanked by clinically white bookshelves...
