About the Item

Jonas Perkins Texas African American Hill Country Artist Image Size: 48 x 42 Frame Size: 55 x 50 Medium: Ceramic Mosaic "Rebound" David Robinson Charles Barkley. This piece is extremely heavy. Probably 100 lbs or more. Biography "Artists are the antennae of civilization." - Jonas Perkins Education: • Art Institute of Chicago - emphasis on metal sculpture • Institute Allende Art Academy of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico Biography: Jonas Perkins grew up in Phoenix, Illinois (a southern suburb of Chicago). His father worked on the railroad lines as a Pullman porter. His mother worked as a housekeeper in a mental institution, in order to have enough money to send Jonas and his sister to private, parochial schools. Jonas says of those days, "the school was great because they encouraged creativity, and I enjoyed learning. But I was one of only a few Black kids, and I wasn't Catholic or rich, so it was hard to make friends. And after school, I would have to run from the Black kids - gangs in my own neighborhood - who wanted to beat me up because I wore a suit and tie to school." But Jonas' mother encouraged him to "become a great leader for our people and to do something amazing." She also introduced him to art by working with ceramics and giving him clay to experiment with. After high school, Jonas - accepted into the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago - studied metal sculpture. But, he says, "everyone was into abstracts, and that wasn't my only thing." So, he decided to go south, and studied in Mexico at the Institute Allende Art Academy of San Miguel de Allende. Loving the South, he ended up in Fredericksburg, Texas, set up a tent, and began creating his portrait art. Later, he built a house and still lives and works on his beautiful Hill Country property. Jonas, an early conservationist, incorporates a "Green" concept in his home, which he designed and continues to build and renovate. He uses only recycled materials, and has domed ceilings made from 12 foot satellite dishes, with wall and ceiling insulation of discarded styrofoam. His floors are mosaics, comprised of scraps from his finished projects. "We artists serve as ambassadors to every nation and every land." - Jonas Perkins

Italian Black and White Carrara Marble Mosaic Tiles with Florentine Monuments
Located in Firenze, IT
In the present work small handcut tiles of pure white Carrara marble are the background of this interesting contemporary mosaic which represents one of the most celebrated landmark in Florence. The facade of the church of Santo Spirito (Holy Spirit), designed and built by Brunelleschi, is created with precious beige-colored Botticino marble tiles and surrounded by a frame of small black glass glazed paste tiles. Carrara and Botticino are among the most famous Tuscan marbles that’s why the local mosaic artist and craftswoman- who creates this superb work of art- decided that the mosaic featuring the most important symbol of Florence should be made of these materials. To make the composition more interesting, two different types of Carrara marble were used: the statuary white marble is matte and the white Carrara marble called "zuccherino" (sugary) is more sparkling. The random alternation of these two marbles give a pleasant vivid and three-dimensional effect to the entire mosaic tile. Each small rectangular and squared tesserae are hand cutted and each one of these mosaic is one of a kind. The mosaic plaque has a wood panel as support and the tile is housed in hand painted giltwood frame. The tile on sale and immediately available now is 15x15 cm and reproduces the church of Santo Spirito (Holy Spirit)- as you can see in the main image- but many other mosaic with the most important symbols and monuments of Florence are available as the Old Bridge, Santa Maria Novella, Florence's Cathedral with the Brunelleschi's dome or the Lily symbol of the city and so on, as showed in the photos. These white and black marble mosaic tiles...
