About the Item
Delicate, frightening, otherworldly are all descriptions that apply to these unique sculptures by artist, Kirk Roda. "Barkbud Herd" is an exploration of pure fantasy that highlights hierarchy, social role, and status within groups, as well as the important part the individual plays within those groups. Each uniquely created treehorse wears an adornment that defines the position one plays within that tribe/society. The herd is fanciful, emotive, and whimsical with a sense of movement and narrative. There is a fragile tension like that of a wobbly newborn deer, demonstrated by the juxtaposition of their twig-like legs and weighty bodies, combined with varied expressions to create a dynamic social group. Each herd is marked by a tag number listing their name and number.
Kirk Roda is a Detroit area sculptor who currently lives in Oxford, Michigan. He graduated from Easter Michigan University where he received a Fellowship to earn his Master’s Degree in Sculpture. His sculpture reflects his interest in satire and surrealism with a dash of elegant classical influence thrown in for good measure. He juxtaposes natural elements by using found objects, steel, clay, and polymers to create rhythmic compositions that convey feelings of whimsy with elements of surprise. Kirk’s many exhibitions include held at the General Motors Design Center Art Gallery in Warren, Michigan and the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum in Saginaw, Michigan. He has won multiple awards for his work including a purchase award from the University of Michigan. His sculpture is found in many private collections in the U.S. and several public collections including the outdoor sculpture collection on the campus of The University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio.
The dimensions are general and may vary slightly. Largest of the group is indicated above and the smallest is 23" h x 18" w x 9.50" d

- Walter Midener "Contemplation" Seated Figure Clay Sculpture Mid-Century ModernLocated in Detroit, MISALE ONE WEEK ONLY “Contemplation” is an abstract clay sculpture of a female. The figure has both arms and legs extended, but the dignified pose suggests an intimate rather than a sexual moment. The sculpture is delicately rendered, but monumental in pose and clean composition reminiscent of the English artist Henry Moore. The surface is warm and slightly rough to the touch. This sculpture is in the round and beautifully balanced geometrically with the hands clasped behind the head forming a slightly flattened polygon shape that is echoed in the positioning of the legs and draped fabric of a presumed dress. The figure draws the viewer into her contemplation, peace and confidence. An exceptional piece by Midener. Walter Midener...Category
