Luca Madrassi
Large French Art Nouveau Patinated Terracotta Sculpture Signed

circa 1890

About the Item

Luca Madrassi (1848-1919), large patinated terracotta sculpture in Art Nouveau style, late 19th century. The sculpture depicts a half-naked young woman sitting in a tree holding a mandolin in her left hand. It is signed L. Madrassi-Paris and bears the publisher's stamp on the back (T&M publishers for Théodore and Mundler). Luca Madrassi was an Italian sculptor naturalized French: he was born on June 8, 1848 in Tricesimo and died on April 6, 1919 in Paris. Luca Madrassi began his art studies in Rome, then studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Pierre-Jules Cavelier and then in that of Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse. Madrassi worked for Carrier-Belleuse and, between 1876 and 1880, occasionally for Gustave Doré. He probably also practiced for Antoine Bourdelle. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris beginning in 1874 with the plaster group The First Confession. He received honorable mentions in 1881, 1882, 1883 and 1885, as well as a third-class medal in 1896 for his Noël marble group. His art, influenced by Clodion and Carrier-Belleuse, did not win him state commissions but was successful with private clients. He obtained French nationality and became a member of the Society of French Artists in 1890. He also exhibited at the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts in 1896. His works were mainly busts, statuettes and allegorical subjects. He collaborated with the Boulenger et Cie pottery factory in Choisy-le-Roi, for which he supplied models for statuettes, vases and art objects, as well as a monumental terracotta fountain with a neo-rocaille aesthetic presented at the 1900 Paris World's Fair. Well-preserved, original patina, small chips and some signs of time.
