Mario Korbel
Portrait of a Gentleman

1912

About the Item

Nothing is more delightful than depictions of people from the turn of the century that convey a distinguished sort of elegance, composure and dignity. Gone today is the concept of "the gentleman" but to collect and have these works lends a sense of time and history to a room. Korbel was one of America's great Beaux Arts sculptors who had an impressive career. At one point one of his great patrons was George Booth the owner of the Detroit News and it is interesting to speculate if this is another noteworthy individual.. However, this was probably cast while he was in Paris as it is a Paris foundry. Works such as this work beautifully on desks and smaller tables to create intimacy and interest. This bronze has lovely quality of detail and the broader appeal of the stance of the gentleman which is eye catching. This artist was born in the Czech state and first came to Chicago. He returned to train in Europe which was required to become an artist of a certain academic level at this time. Upon his return he was in Chicago and New York, eventually making New York his home. He became of full member of the National Academy of of Design in 1944. He is in many distinguished museums and institutions and private collections of note. The work is signed JM Korbel 1912 - has a stamp of the Monteguielli Foundry and that it is a lost wax cast. It has a lively patina. The cane is not meant to be rod straight. It is not known how many casts were done of this but probably less than 5.

Toogoods and Sons, Ltd, established in the early nineteenth century, had, by the turn of the century, grown to become the largest seed company...

Joie De Vivre, bronze figurative dance sculpture
Located in Greenwich, CT
This joyous in the round bronze can turn on its base, making for dramatic presentation and enjoyment that is interactive. It is based on the idea of the Three Graces which is often an allegorical subject in sculpture. Wein has done a contemporary feeling interpretation of this classic theme. Piece itself measure 12 1/2 inches and sits on a 3 1/4 inch base and is attached to its base at two points and it is a revolving or rather turning base. The two points on which the toes touch and are secured are striking for how little of the bronze touches the base. It is Fourth in an edition of 13. Albert Wein...
