About the Item

Animal Stack-They Help Each Other, sculpture by Melanie Yazzie, Navajo, Silver limited edition of 8 As a printmaker, painter, and sculptor, my work draws upon my rich Diné (Navajo) heritage. The work I make attempts to follows the Diné dictum “walk in beauty” literally, creating beauty and harmony. As an artist, I work to serve as an agent of change by encouraging others to learn about social, cultural, and political phenomena shaping the contemporary lives of Native peoples in the United States and beyond. My work incorporates both personal experiences as well as the events and symbols from Dine culture. My early work focused on depictions of the harsh realities of Native peoples (i.e., racism, identity conflict, poverty, abuse, etc.) to bring to Native issues to the forefront, but more recently I have been making work with a positive twist. Due to personal health issues and trying to live a calmer life style, I have been focusing on quiet and balance. I believe my work is reflecting this shift. The work is also informed and shaped by personal experiences and tries to tell many stories about things both real and imagined. Melanie Yazzie exhibits internationally and has is represented exclusively by our gallery 1995. She is a Professor and Head of Printmaking in the Department of Art and Art History at University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado.

Grand Canyon Symbols Set
By Denny Haskew
Located in Loveland, CO
"Grand Canyon Symbols" by Denny Haskew Bronze, Set of 5 sculptures, designs are based on ancient wall drawings the artist saw in the Grand Canyon. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Denny Haskew currently resides in Loveland, Colorado where he is actively engaged in the art industry as a sculptor. He received his degree from the University of Utah, then served two years in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Having spent numerous years as a guide and ski instructor, Denny has learned to love the rivers and mountains of the western states of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, and Utah. After moving to Loveland, a hub of successful working sculptors, he wasted no time in getting monumental sculpture experience through working with renowned sculptors including Fritz White and Kent Ullberg N.A. Since 1987, Denny has created and placed dozens of monumental compositions; spanning the full spectrum of the figurative genre. As a member of the Potawatomi Citizen Nation, it is only natural for his artwork to follow the Native American culture. His art has not been limited to Native American and southwestern subjects, however, as he frequently explores abstract forms placing emphasis on the qualities of the metal and stone used. As a Charter member of the National Sculptors' Guild and being close to other sculptors and the Loveland area foundries has helped him to master all the foundry processes involved in producing a desirable and lasting monumental bronze sculpture. Over 50 major public placements include the Smithsonian Institution, DC.; the Gilcrease Museum, OK; Cerritos, CA; Little Rock, AR; the Shakopee Mdewakanton Dakota Sioux collection, MN, and the Barona Band of Mission Indians...
