About the Item

This tabletop indoor figurative sculpture of animals is made of resin. Award-winning sculptor Nicholas Crombach’s detailed and realistic figurative pieces often explore the complex relationship humans have with animals. This cast resin sculpture of a hound who has hunted a fox which then hunted a goose is patinated in indigo, black and white. Growing up on a dairy farm, Crombach observed that dynamic from a young age. His contemporary artwork is contemplative and provocative, cleverly imbued with a wry sense of humour. This is one of a series Crombach created called ‘End of the Chase,’ a response to the 2014 hunting act passed in Britain designed to end the historic tradition of hunting with hounds. Edition two of eight. “Our capacity to have a moral obligation is unique to humans and intuitively causes us to anthropomorphize and morally consider the world around us. This characteristic of our nature makes us paradoxically empathize with the animals we sacrifice while sustaining human life and culture.” Nicholas Crombach Nicholas Crombach was born in Toronto (1989). He is a graduate of OCAD’s Sculpture and Installation program. He has received many grants and awards and was the 2016-17 artist in residence at The Florence Trust in London, UK and in 2022 at the Studios at MASS MoCA in the US. Crombach has completed many public art commissions In Ontario including the sculpture Wind Vane in Woodstock (2023) and Flock on Main Street Plaza in Niagara Falls. (2023). He has exhibited widely in Canada, Spain and England.

Fox Hound After the Hunt, Bronze Sculpture by Charles Rumsey
By Charles Rumsey
Located in Brookville, NY
CHARLES CARY RUMSEY, born in Buffalo, NY in 1879. His interest in sculpture appeared and was encouraged at an early age. The most significant encouragement came when the boy was taken by his parents to Paris in 1893. After graduating from Harvard in 1902, Rumsey returned to Paris where he took a studio in the Latin Quarter and enrolled and the Julian and Colarossi Academies. One professor, Emmanuel Fremiet, a specialist in equestrian statuary, devoted special emphasis to the study of the horse, and his training was to have a decisive influence on the young Rumsey. Apart from sculpture, horses were the great passion of his life. He was an excellent horseman and an 8 goal polo player with Meadowbrook Polo Club Long Island NY. Rumsey’s specialties included equestrian sculptures – portraits of polo players and prize horses, as well as of cowboys, cattle and horses as metaphors. He worked principally in bronze and stone, often employing mythology and historical themes articulated in private commissions for freestanding statuary and in public monuments. His 40-foot bas relief panels of Indians, horses and buffalos for the Manhattan Bridge and the heroic subject matter of Rice Stadium commission are examples. The estate of Charles Rumsey...
