About the Item
A large, bronze baby macaw struggles and screeches from an awkward position on the ground. Loud, self-confident and active, macaws are the symbol of creative intelligence, inspiration, and freedom. Relying on traditional skills of representation, Macaw connotes both a serious and humorous affect. Macaws are colourful birds in the parrot family that live up to 50 years. In North America, the birds spend their lives caged or indoors. This powerful work can be positioned either outdoors or indoors.
Nicholas Crombach (b.1989, Kingston, ON) graduated from OCAD University’s Sculpture and Installation program in 2012 winning the Faculty Award, the Samuel Lazar Kagan Award and the Hayden Davies Memorial Award. Working in a variety of cast media including bronze and resin, Crombach explores the complex relationship of animals and humans. His thought provoking work is imbued with wry humor.
Crombach was recipient of the Abraham and Malka Green award, a BMO 1st Art Nomination as well as grants from Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation and the Ontario Arts Council. He was the 2016-17 artist in residence at The Florence Trust in London, UK.
Crombach has completed public art commissions notably Billy, Nanny and the Kids for Appleby Village Mall in Burlington, Ontario and he has exhibited widely in Canada, Spain, and England. His work is held in private, corporate and public collections including the Museu Europeu d'Art Modern in Barcelona and First Capital Realty in Toronto.
