About the Item

'Together' is an original opal serpentine sculpture by the Zimbabwean artist by Noel Mwanza. The sculpture presents a moment of motherly devotion, with a woman's tall figure embracing her child. Their faces are calm and content, with downcast eyes and full lips. In capturing these figures, Mwanza plays with the texture and finish of the stone, using a fine polish to describe the softness of skin alongside natural and rough textures to reveal the sculptural process and materiality of the opal. opal serpentine mounted to sandstone base 15.25 x 8.5 x 5 inches, sculpture 3.5 x 9.5 x 8.25 inches, base 18.5 x 9.5 x 8.25 inches, overall not signed acquired directly from the artist overall good condition; some minor surface scratches Noel Mwanza was born in Harare in 1964 into a family of sculptors; his brother, Jim Mwanza, is also a sculptor and they often work together. Noel became interested in all aspects of art at an early age, as did many of those who went on to become full-time artists during the goods times in Zimbabwe. In 1992, established carver Ernest Chiwaridzo, apprenticed him for a number of years until he became confident of his ability to start out on his own and develop numerous styles. His favorite stone to work with is fruit serpentine due to its various colors. Using this stone, Noel says he can create a similar sculptures, but none will ever be the same due to the changing colors. Noel lives with his wife and sons just on the outskirts of Harare in a house he managed to buy through the proceeds of selling his art. When he speaks about his practice, he says art should flow from the heart and that inspiration can also come from watching people interact with each other.

'Mother and Child' original stone Shona sculpture by Obert Mukumbi sitting
By Obert Mukumbi
Located in Milwaukee, WI
'Mother and Child' is an original stone sculpture by the Zimbabwean artist Obert Mukumbi. This sculpture is unlike most other examples of Shona sculpture in that it has been carved to sit on a step, ledge or shelf rather than to stand upright. While this difference offers the chance for a more interactive artwork that can be set in unexpected locations, the aesthetics sensibilities that Obert applies to the subject are steeped in the Shona tradition. The materiality of the stone is on full display, with the artist playing with textures of rough-hewn stone and smooth polish. In addition, the mother and child show an intimate relationship, a common and desired theme amongst Shona artists. springstone not signed 25 x 10 x 11 inches, overall body stands 16 inches tall from seat legs extend 9.25 inches downward from seat concrete base included at request of buyer 95 lbs Overall excellent condition with no signs of wear or damage.
