About the Item
'Together' is an original opal serpentine sculpture by the Zimbabwean artist by Noel Mwanza. The sculpture presents a moment of motherly devotion, with a woman's tall figure embracing her child. Their faces are calm and content, with downcast eyes and full lips. In capturing these figures, Mwanza plays with the texture and finish of the stone, using a fine polish to describe the softness of skin alongside natural and rough textures to reveal the sculptural process and materiality of the opal.

Noel Mwanza was born in Harare in 1964 into a family of sculptors; his brother, Jim Mwanza, is also a sculptor and they often work together. Noel became interested in all aspects of art at an early age, as did many of those who went on to become full-time artists during the goods times in Zimbabwe. In 1992, established carver Ernest Chiwaridzo, apprenticed him for a number of years until he became confident of his ability to start out on his own and develop numerous styles. His favorite stone to work with is fruit serpentine due to its various colors. Using this stone, Noel says he can create a similar sculptures, but none will ever be the same due to the changing colors. Noel lives with his wife and sons just on the outskirts of Harare in a house he managed to buy through the proceeds of selling his art. When he speaks about his practice, he says art should flow from the heart and that inspiration can also come from watching people interact with each other.

- 'Relaxing Woman' original Shona stone sculpture signed by Colleen MadamombeBy Colleen MadamombeLocated in Milwaukee, WI'Relaxing Woman' is an original black serpentine sculpture by the celebrated second generation Shona artist Colleen Madamombe. The sculpture presents a character common to Madamombe's work: a woman with a round face and wearing a billowing, layered dress. She holds her hands on her knees as she sits recumbent on the ground. As is so desired of her work, this sculpture is a play in texture: her face and hands are polished and smooth, which is juxtaposed with the rough-hewn surfaces of the clothing and hair. black serpentine 905 x 16 x 11 inches Signed along the base on the reverse Acquired directly from the artist (C-24) Excellent condition with no chips or signs of wear Colleen Madamombe (1964–2009) was born in Harare, Zimbabwe. - 'Scratching Bird' Shona stone sculpture signed by Chenjerai ChiripanyangaBy Chenjerai ChiripanyangaLocated in Milwaukee, WI'Scratching Bird' is an original opal serpentine stone sculpture signed by the contemporary Zimbabwean artist Chenjerai Chiripanyanga. The artist presents in this sculpture a highly abstracted figure of a bird, the long beak and eye of which emerges shining and polished from within the rough-hewn surface of the stone. Though Chiripanyanga is trained in the Shona stone carving tradition, the way that the bird seems to be revealed out of the stone reminds of the "unfinished" sculptures of Michelangelo...Category
