About the Item
Expressive ceramic head sculpture in stoneware with vanadium glaze and oxidized iron base. Testa No. 13 belongs to Óscar Aldonza’s “Testas” series, a body of work in which each ceramic head is conceived as a singular variation within a collective exploration. This stoneware sculpture (43 × 25 × 27 cm) emphasizes the raw materiality of clay, enriched by the unpredictable textures of high-temperature firing and the natural oxidation of iron, which wraps the base like a corroded chain.
The surface reveals cracks, reliefs, and organic irregularities, underscoring the artist’s expressive, almost brutalist approach. The head is not a portrait but an archetypal face, where Aldonza translates existential concerns into matter: individuality and collectivity, fragility and permanence, damage and resilience. The vanadium glaze introduces earthy tonalities and subtle metallic shifts, while the oxidized iron adds both weight and symbolic depth.
Each sculpture in the series is unique, deliberately open to variation and chance, offering collectors the opportunity to acquire a single piece or assemble powerful groupings. Pricing conditions are available for multiple acquisitions.

Óscar Aldonza Torres (b. 1976, Santiago de Compostela) is a sculptor and Sculpture Professor at EASD Mestre Mateo. He holds a Diploma in Volume Techniques from EASD Mestre Mateo, a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Seville, and an MA in Art Heritage Management from the University of Santiago de Compostela. Winner of the 1st Prize at the XIV Open-Air Sculpture Symposium in O Grove and 1st Accésit of the Francisco Asorey International Sculpture Prize (Cambados), his work has been presented in venues such as the Salon d’Automne in Paris, O Rectángulo de Ouro in Portugal, “Respostas sen preguntas” at Galería Sabor a Menta (Santiago de Compostela), and “Animalium” at the MIHL Museum (Lugo), among others. In his sculptural practice, Óscar Aldonza Torres positions the human figure as an intimate mirror, reflecting universal fears and inner doubts. His creative process—both impulsive and experimental—is underpinned by rigorous material research, allowing forms to emerge organically as each work evolves. Predominantly working in series, Aldonza Torres embraces ambivalence and conceptual openness, crafting open-ended narratives that invite viewers to engage emotionally—ranging from identification to repulsion and intrigue—and to complete the dialogue with their own perceptions.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Frank Kleinholz was a painter based in New York City whose work spanned several art movements including Expressionism and Social Realism. His work was strongly influenced by Max Beckmann, is a late survival of the social commentary expressionism of the WPA era; His early lithograph works were intensely personal and reflected the influence of the Depression and the World Wars, but his palette lightened as he increasingly focused on families and the bonds between adults and children. He was contemporary of William Gropper and Ben Shahn. As the son of a blind father and hard-working mother who supported the family with a delicatessen. From early childhood, he had to earn a living and sold newspapers and ran errands for local businesses. He graduated from Fordham Law School, and at age 23 was admitted to the bar. In the mid-1930s, while practicing insurance as well as law, he began oil painting and printmaking with teachers including Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Sol Wilson. He gained quick recognition and between 1941 and 1980 participated in numerous exhibitions including the National Academy of Design, the Brooklyn Museum and the Worcester Art Institute. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Kleinholz graduated Fordham Law School in 1923. In the 1930s, he began studying painting under Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Sol Wilson. He quickly rose to prominence with the inclusion of Abstract art in the Carnegie Institute exhibition of 1941. His painting Backstreet won a purchase prize by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Chronology His strongest influences were American Social Realists Reginald Marsh and Philip Evergood, the German Expressionists George Grosz and Kathe Kollwitz, the Mexican muralists Diego Rivera, Jorge Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros, and the early 20th century Paris Modernists.
Described by Newsweek as a "Brooklyn-born Gauguin," Kleinholz focused on urban life in New York, Brooklyn and Coney Island, as well as intimate, social realist scenes of parents and children, watercolor paintings of flowers and birds, and sunbathers. Paseo, from Service Scènes de Corrida, A.R. 416
By Pablo Picasso
Located in Palo Alto, CA
Created in 1959, Pablo Picasso (Málaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) Paseo A.R. 416 is numbered from the edition of 50 on the reverse and stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and ‘EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
Pablo Picasso was an avid fan of bullfighting his entire life, attending his first corridas when he was a child in Spain and gaining a renewed interest in the events when he settled in the South of France after World War II. Undoubtedly the theatrical drama and flashy machismo of the matadors appealed greatly to Picasso's sensibilities and resonated with his Spanish roots. In 1959, Picasso produced an 8-piece plate series, each featuring a different bullfighting scene suggested through lively stipple lines. Paseo A.R. 416 depicts a line of bullfighters highlighted by a streak of yellow. The strokes of blue above and below the figures contrast with the warm of the yellow, creating visual tension that anticipates the drama of the fight.
