About the Item

This moss-patina stoneware head showcases raw raku textures and unpredictable glaze effects in a striking ceramic sculpture. The stoneware head’s surface—marbled in muted grays, earthy greens, and soft taupe—reveals the beauty of chemical chance as the artist embraces imperfection. Stoneware head and ceramic sculpture unite here through Aldonza’s impulsive firing process, producing spontaneous crackle, pitting, and sculptural relief. Handcrafted in 2019 by Óscar Aldonza, this “Testa” measures 41 × 22 × 25 cm and weighs 5 kg. Made from refractory stoneware, it is lightly treated with manganese patina and finished with a carborundum-infused high-temperature glaze. True to the Testas series, each head is modeled directly in clay—no molds—then fired to encourage organic surfaces and glaze “errors.” The deliberate roughness and moss-like tints evoke the passage of time, the fragility of identity, and the tension between individuality and collectivity. Ideal as a standalone focal point or as part of the broader Testas ensemble—available separately or as a curated group—this piece invites contemplation of resilience, transience, and the poetic resonance of “mistakes” born in the kiln.

This is a bronze cast sculpture by Philip Pavia is part of his series of "Imaginary Portraits from the Club" , a one-man exhibition at Max Protetch Gallery, New York in 1982.
