Patricia Piccinini
Trident

2007

About

Medium: fiberglass, auto paint, leather, steel Trident is from a series of “baby motorcycle” sculptures Piccinini refers to as “pups.” Though it may appear to be factory made, it has been painted by hand and is unique, referring to the singular nature of living things. By equating machines to animals, Piccinini points out the plausibility of technology that will be selfperpetuating and self-directing. Artificial intelligence is something that frightens many people. Because this piece is “cute,” does it make the idea of A.I. more palatable?
