About the Item
After Pietro da Barga (Italian, Rome, active c. 1574-1588) "Farnese Bull" Patinated Bronze Sculpture, late 19th century, depicting Antiope directing her sons Amphion and Zethus attacking Dirce as a shepherd and his dog look on, on a rectangular plinth. 27" H x 19" W x 19" D. Note: This sculpture derives from the famous marble statue discovered in the Baths of Caracalla in 1545. The next year, it went into the possession of the Pope's family in the Farnese Palace in Rome, where, in 1550, it was partially restored under Michelangelo's advisement; it underwent a second restoration by Gian Battista Bianchi circa 1580. A portion of the Farnese Collection, including the Farnese Bull, was sent to Naples in 1788 and later placed in the Museo Nazionale, where it still remains today.

THE LAST DAYS OF NAPOLÉON BY
Located in New Orleans, LA
This highly evocative bronze by Vincenzo Vela captures the deposed Emperor Napoléon on his deathbed, holding a map of Europe and lost in thought about what might have been. Remarkable among most portrayals of the exiled leader, this highly detailed sculpture depicts Napoléon at his most vulnerable. Nonetheless, Vela perfectly captures his still-heroic bearing, which imparts to this work a monumental quality and quiet dignity.
