From Rene Murray – "After viewing ancient Japanese Haniwa sculptures at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, I created a series of horses. They are blocky, statuesque, grand and imposing. If they were able to move, I could see them lumbering into a child's fairy tale."
Deep in the heart of the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn, artist Rene Murray runs her studio building, complete with gas-fired kiln – creating vessels both functional and sculptural using the age-old techniques and conventions of the potter. Rene Murray's work is in museum collections – both the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, Michigan and the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, New York – and private collections across the United States. Her work has shown in gallery solo shows and group shows, including the Clay Art Center, Port Chester, NY; Greenwich House Pottery, NYC; San Antonio Art Gallery, San Antonio, TX; Art In Clay, BWAC, Brooklyn, NY; Funke Fired Arts Gallery, Cincinnati, OH; and the prestigious SOFA CHICAGO Art Fair.
Rene Murray completed her Master of Fine Arts degree in ceramics at the University of Michigan in 1964. She was the first woman at the University of Michigan to do so.
