About the Item
This strongly posed female nude figure in patinated bronze was created rapidly in clay - in gestures that verge on abstraction. It has then been cast in bronze. This is the Artist Proof in an edition of 12.
A former student of philosophy and modernist steel sculpture, Belgian-born (1966), Canadian resident Richard Tosczak explores the human form in bronze. In his current practice he uses quick pen and ink figure studies as source material for sculptures and larger works on canvas. Reflecting the rigorous formalism of his early training, sculptures are modeled exclusively from a single drawing. Tosczak’s figurative sculptures are in public collections in Alberta, Canada and Barcelona, Spain. He has exhibited in Canada, Brazil, Spain and France. Tosczak is well known for his evocative sculptures of the human figure. In 2013, his work was selected for exhibition in the prestigious Figurativa Exhibition in Barcelona.

Richard Tosczak
Richard Tosczak (b. 1966, Belgium) studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Further studies were pursued in France with another internationally acclaimed classic sculptor, Martine Vaugel. Tosczak’s bronze sculptures are marked by a dynamic formalism that is based on spontaneous pen and ink drawings. “The figurative works of the last few years are overtly anonymous and convey an intense introspection. Even those figures, inspired by dynamic activities such as dance and contact improvisation, give the impression they are turning inward into themselves. I believe this reflects and parallels my personal experience and possibly my growth as an artist.” Richard Tosczak Tosczak has exhibited in Canada, Brazil, Spain and France and was the only Canadian selected for the 2013 Figurative exhibition in Barcelona. His work is in corporate, private and public collections including the University of Alberta Collections, the City of Edmonton, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the University of Calgary.
