About the Item

ROBERT CLATWORTHY (b1928) HORSE, No2, Series of 9 28cm Bronze Stamped with initials Clatworthy produced his most important works during the early 1980’s. Horse is powerful expression for the intense force of movement and vitality of the horse Best known as an animal sculptor, much of Clatworthy’s early work consisted of vigorously modelled bulls, cats and horses and his unique impressionistic style explored a middle ground between the figurative and the abstract. Unlike Giacometti and Frink, who worked slowly in dry plaster or clay, Robert worked rapidly in quick-drying wet plaster to instil his animals with energy and vitality as demonstrated in Horse. PROVENANCE : Private Collection Paisnell Gallery, London Private Collection Comprehensive cataloguing available on request THE ARTIST Robert preferred not to talk about his art, saying “it must stand on its own without the need of words to support it.” Rising to prominence alongside Eduardo Paolozzi, Alberto Giacometti and Elizabeth Frink, Robert Clatworthy’s work was described by the art critic David Sylvester as: “the best thing I have seen by any English sculptor younger than Henry Moore.” Even at the height of his commercial success, Clatworthy believed in following his own rhythms rather than the demands of the art market, and he eventually fell out with his fashionable dealers over their requests for constant production. He concentrated on the art of sculpting, in disregard of commerce, posterity or the infrastructure of the contemporary art world.

L'inspiré Self Portrait Marc Chagall Valentina Vava Lithograph 1963 Mourlot 398
By Marc Chagall
Located in Eversholt, Bedfordshire
Inspiration or L'inspiré - The artist and his wife, self-portrait. This is a self-portrait of the great artist, depicting him as lost in thought before one of his paintings, which is apparently related to his home country Russia, as suggested by the small figure in the lower right of the work. Chagall’s wife Valentina (“Vava”), who was also from Russia, is looking over his shoulder, full of longing. The small surreal elements that are characteristic of Chagall’s paintings are also present here: the silhouettes of the houses that seems to stick out of the painting and a figure with a flute or trombone standing on its head. Chagall Lithographe, Volume II of the catalogue raisonné of Chagall's lithographic work, see Mourlot 398, 1957-1962, Paris 1963, imprinted by Imprimerie Mourlot for the publisher André Sauret. A lithographic plate from the catalog that was published in 10,000 copies. Condition : Excellent Set inside a cream mount bearing brass cartellino Visible sheet size length 23cm, Height 31.50cm In a carved and gilded frame Frame size Length 44cm, Height 55.5cm The reverse with a paper label in Japanese Provenance : Private Collection, purchased with Lovers in Grey

Alan Wallwork Vessel Vase Pottery Sculpture TOTEM White Brown Terracotta
Located in Eversholt, Bedfordshire
Alan Wallwork (1931-2019): Organic landscape sculptural vessel, 1960-1965 -Exhibiting the articulated, inventive, organic qualities & tactility of Wallwork’s early oeuvre for which he is best known - This sculptural landscape vessel has been handmade by coiling, slabbing and shaping the clay. The totemic form and pitted and pierced surfaces draw on the abstract landscape and tactility of elements in nature. matte glazes and oxides have been skillfully used to enhance the rich textures of the surfaces and the organic aesthetic. - Wallwork is one of the great individualists in British pottery, developing an archetypal language that echoed some of the wider artistic obsessions of that period, what the art critic Herbert Read called the “postwar ferment” of sculptural activity. - This piece was made during 1960-1965, the time that Wallwork was sharing a studio in Greenwich with Bernard Rooke and comes from a private collection along with a waterscape vase by Rooke and a bottle by Robert Fournier...
