Rod MOORHEAD (b. United States) Lilliputian #27 Copper on soapstone base 8”H Edition of 9 *This listing is for ONE sculpture. Rod Moorhead began his career as a potter, in the late 1980’s. His interests turned to ceramic sculpture, which evolved into an interest in bronze and stone. Though his work ranges from large scale bronze and stone sculptures to small scale clay figures, his first love remains small-scale ceramic sculpture, for which he has received numerous awards. It is these small scale works, the Lilliputians, which stand approximately 6” in height, that are among some of his most captivating. The word lilliputian comes from Jonathan Swift's 1726 novel, Gulliver's Travels. Lilliput is the name of a fictional island whose people, the Lilliputians, stand only about six inches high. The lilliputians symbolize humankind’s wildly excessive pride in its own tiny existence. Swift fully intended the irony of representing the tiniest race visited by Gulliver as by far the most vain, and smug, both collectively and individually. There is more backbiting and conspiracy, more of the pettiness of small minds who imagine themselves to be grand, in Lilliput than anywhere else in Gulliver’s Travels. Gulliver is a naïve consumer of the Lilliputians’ grandiose imaginings: he is both flattered by the attention and cowed by their threats of punishment, forgetting that they have no real physical power over him. The lilliputians symbolize misplaced human pride, and point out Gulliver’s inability to see it correctly. Perhaps now more than ever, the Lilliputians seem an incredibly appropriate reminder that, in the big picture of life, we have each just a very tiny part. Rod’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans and the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum in Biloxi. He has garnered numerous public commissions, among them large scale works for the University of Mississippi, Mississippi State University and Whitney Plantation in Louisiana. His work is collected by high profile collectors who include Morgan Freeman, Alfre Woodard and Roger Ogden, among others. Rod lives and works in Oxford, MS with his wife Younok Chong, who is also an artist.
