About the Item

Master sculptor Harold Castor created this realistic depiction of the Pioneer Woman seeking new land and opportunity in the American West with her two children. The sculpture is designed with intricate designs in the flowing dress and cape of the female figure. The bronze sculpture is set on a marble base. This bronze and marble sculpture is signed by the artist and is from the collection of the artist's daughter. Harold Castor graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1939 as one of the first recipients of a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He taught design and art classes at Central High School and Oklahoma City University before moving to New York where he received his master’s in art education from Columbia University in 1947. In New York, he was President of the Sculptors Workshop from 1951 – 1973, Director of the Johnson Atelier and Technical Institute for Sculpture in Princeton and Chairman of the Department of Sculpture and Design at the Universal School. From 1976 – 1987 he was co-founder and chief designer for the Castor Cooper Collection in New York. Harold Castor became known as a master sculptor in New York designing several monumental sculptures of sports figures for the Smithsonian Institution, and religious commissions for the National Cathedral in Washington DC. He also designed commissioned pieces for the corporate offices of Shearson Prudential, Mercedes Benz and the European American Bank in Manhattan. The Castor Cooper Collection manufactured, by the sculptural process of casting, an exceptional line of pewter tableware made from his own alloy that takes a high polish. Together with co-founder Dorothy Cooper, he designed and manufactured a line of pewterware, including candelabras, vases, goblets and statuettes.

  • 'Danae, ' by ArmanH, Bronze Sculpture
    By Arman Hambardzumyan
    Located in Oklahoma City, OK
This 20.47" x 9.44" x 10.62" bronze sculpture by Armenian artist, Arman Hambardzumyan, was created in 2013 and depicts the tragedy of the Greek goddess Danae. The artist's interpretation of this classical Greek myth, where an oracle foretold Danae would bear a son who would kill her father, and in an attempt to evade this, Acrisius, her father, imprisoned her. The king of Gods - Zeus, desired Danae and came to her in the form of golden rain. The oracle came true, Danae conceived a son, Perseus, who killed Acrisius by accident. The expressive love between Danae and Zeus is imitated by the naked body of a woman and a golden shower on her body. "The image of a woman always inspires me in both physical and spiritual beauty. In this sculpture, I tried to express the image of a woman with her soul, which has no smell, taste and is not tangible. The contour of the beautiful shimmering body of a woman allows you to feel the presence of the female soul inside."--ArmanH Arman is an Armenian artist represented in several major collections around the world including the Terra Garden in Kikinda (Serbia), Contemporary Hall of the National Museum of Fine Arts (Chisinau, Republic of Moldova), Boyajyan Center for the Arts (Prague, Czech Republic), and at private collections in Europe, Asia and in the USA. This work was exhibited in 2015 in 2015 Myths, Folk Art Museum after Hovhannes Sharambeyan. Yerevan, Armenia. Exhibit coordinator: Armine Beglaryan; and at the Art Expo, New York, April 21-24, 2017, organized by Redwood Art...

  • THE LAST DAYS OF NAPOLÉON BY
    Located in New Orleans, LA
This highly evocative bronze by Vincenzo Vela captures the deposed Emperor Napoléon on his deathbed, holding a map of Europe and lost in thought about what might have been. Remarkable among most portrayals of the exiled leader, this highly detailed sculpture depicts Napoléon at his most vulnerable. Nonetheless, Vela perfectly captures his still-heroic bearing, which imparts to this work a monumental quality and quiet dignity. The mate to this figure is the colossal marble at the Musée du Château de Malmaison, which was shown at the Paris Salon of 1867. The founder of the verismo movement in Italy, Vela was one of the great exponents of realism in sculpture. Born in Ligornetto, Switzerland in 1820, he studied under celebrated sculptor, Benedetto Cacciatori. He was also influenced both by the work of Tuscan sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini, who seamlessly combined neoclassicism with naturalism and the romantic painting of Francesco Hayez...
