Part of Ser Uang Huang’s Travelers Series. Huang has a gift for capturing fleeting yet profound moments from everyday life, and Midst of Waiting is one such example. Waiting is an inseparable part of our daily rhythm, whether it’s waiting for people, for a bus, for a meal, or for a performance to begin. In these pauses, some pass the time scrolling on their phones, while others tilt their heads upward. The figure in this work gently lifts his gaze, as if absorbed in the shifting clouds above, or perhaps caught by the flight of birds or a passing airplane. It is a sculpture about finding small pleasures in the midst of waiting.
The lines of the work are simple and understated, with only faint traces carving out the coat, trousers, and shoes. This restraint makes the piece enduringly engaging. Through the lost-wax bronze casting, the textures and woodgrains of the original carving are faithfully preserved, while the patina recreates the soft gradations of the wood’s natural hues. The result is a piece that feels both unadorned and full of quiet imagination.
