About the Item
Part of Ser Uang Huang’s Childhood Series. What? draws on the innocence and playfulness of childhood, capturing a child’s carefree gesture in a form that is slightly cartoonish yet simple and direct. It reflects pure, unembellished joy, the freedom of doing whatever comes to mind. Many adults may have forgotten the childhood game of bending over and peeking at the world upside down through their legs, where everything appeared inverted and endlessly amusing. This sculpture brings that memory vividly to life, inviting a smile of recognition.
Cast in bronze using the lost-wax method, the work preserves the wood grain and fine textures of the original carving, down to the smallest marks of the chisel. The patina recreates the natural gradations of the wood, lending warmth and familiarity to the bronze. Lighthearted in pose yet solid in form, What? allows viewers to rediscover the simple curiosity and laughter of childhood.
