About the Item

Narrative figures in various combinations of human, animal and natural forms are the main characters of this work. This blending of forms is reflective of nature, mythology and storytelling. Many of the animals and forms are drawn directly from my immediate garden and surrounding nature. Some elaborate and some simple, each is an individual allegorical being, navigating challenges of existing in the world, or being brought from the past forward to comment on the same. They are created primarily in clay, but I use a wide variety of materials from paper, metal, paint, wood and much more to complete each piece. Currently, ideas of movement and play have led me to an exploration inspired by toys and simple mechanics. This has altered both the structure and palette of the work, brightening my color and challenging me with additional physical considerations of implied movement and interaction. There is Something Forgiving...

I am a multi-disciplinary artist who has professionally shown my work in dozens of galleries and museums since the late 1990s. But while my work can take many different forms, my practice is rooted in drawing. Whether I am working on the watercolor and acrylic pieces, or fiber-based pieces, every project and every idea begins with a drawing. Through that process, I lay out my ideas, ask myself questions, experiment with different options, and try to resolve all the formal and conceptual issues I will attempt in my final piece. The themes I have explored in my work from 1999 on, and even before then, have remained the same even though my style has shifted radically. I have been interested in exploring self-portraiture, personal narratives, femininity, politics, and the use of text in art. I have remained constant in my exploration of critical theory and art history, and drawn influence from artists as diverse as Joseph Beuys, Henry Darger, and Adrian Piper...

A Curious Nest
By Jenny Day
Located in New Orleans, LA
Retreating from the stress and chaos of the last year, I created another landscape; populated by an army of friendly creatures. Here the burdens of coronavirus, climate change, and political division are dismissed by hot pink kittens that arc gracefully through meter showers and owls that bury into beds of daffodils. In this place worry is edged out by the fantastic and mystical snails trail neon candy canes through the scorched earth. The apocalyptic is supplanted by the surreal and the allegorical. Anxiety followed me. The escapist reflects and distorts its shadow world, the real, a funhouse mirror...
