About the Item

French Art Deco terracotta sculpture by Ugo Cipriani (1887-1960), France, 1930s. A man operating a rudder. Measurements : Width : 31"(79cm), Height : 16.7"(42.5cm), Depth : 8.7"(22cm). Signed "U.Cipriani" on the base (see photo) and marked "Terre Cuite d'Art". Son of the sculptor Adolfo Cipriani and Emilia Pancani, Ugo Cipriani is the fifth child of a sibship of nine. He lives in the Oltrarno district of Borgo San Frediano. After studying at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts, Ugo Cipriani worked with marble, terracotta, bronze and alabaster in the spirit of the 1920s Art Deco movement. One of his most famous works, a bronze monument (1919) by the Italian nationalist and irredentist Guglielmo Oberdan, is on the square of the same name, in Florence. In 1935, Ugo Cipriani emigrated to France to escape the fascist regime of Mussolini. He lives in Paris as a political refugee and continues to create there until his death in 1960.
