Alabaster temple with mythological figurative bronze figure from the 19th century

About the Item

Alabaster temple with Corinthian capitals, palmette decoration runs along the rim. On the front, two swans are carved on the base, while there are five rosettes at the top. In the center is a bronze statuette depicting Queen Onphale dressed in the skin of the Nemean lion and the club, attributes of the demigod hero Hercules, whose lover she was. Because of the exquisite quality of the carving, material and provenance (a relevant Florentine collection), it can be ascribed to the production of the workshop of Giovanni Insom, an artist from Trentino who specialized in alabaster work. He was especially active in Florence in the first half of the nineteenth century, under Napoleonic rule and the return of the Habsburg-Lorraine, where his atelier became the most sought-after for this kind of objet d'art and was a must-visit destination for foreigners coming to Tuscany.
