Altorilievo in marmo della Montagnola Senese raffigurante un profilo femminile a mezzo busto, Siena, XIV secolo. L'altorilievo, nella tradizione senese del XIV secolo, si caratterizza per la sua profondità e la sua capacità di rappresentare figure e scene in tre dimensioni; è caratterizzato da uno stile gotico-romanico, con figure slanciate, vestiti decorati e un forte uso del simbolismo. Il nostro alto rilievo raffigura una donna a mezzobusto messa di tre quarti: sulla sua testa di vede ancora una corona così come si notano le vesti tipiche delle nobildonne. Poteva trattarsi di una Santa Caterina d'Alessandria. Tracce di policromia sono ancora visibili sulle vesti. Sicuramente faceva parte di un insieme di formelle poi smembrate: i bordi sono stati rifiniti in un'epoca successiva. Il materiale appartiene a quel gruppo di "marmi colorati" che si cavavano nella zona detta "Montagnola senese", un massiccio calcareo a pochi chilometri dalla città: si tratta della tonalità bianco-grigia, utilizzata nelle pievi della Montagnola Senese (XI secolo) e poi nella stessa città di Siena (dal XIV secolo) sia come pietra da costruzione sia nelle opere d'arte, successivamente sostituita dai marmi apuani perchè più resistenti agli agenti atmosferici.
