Figurative mythological bronze statuette in Florentine Mannerist style of the 19th century

About the Item

Small gilt bronze objet d'art on wooden base depicting a young sea creature, most likely a newt. These types of objects were very common in aristocratic homes, often kept in the lord's study as card stoppers, and, in addition to a collector's market of their own, most were bought as souvenirs during travels such as the Grand Tour. This one specifically, for stylistic reasons reminiscent of full Central Italian Mannerism, could be attributed to a Tuscan or Roman manufacture.
