Marble High Relief of the Montagnola Senese Profile Siena 14th century

circa 1380

About the Item

Marble high relief from the Sienese Montagnola depicting a half-length female profile, Siena, 14th century. High relief, in the 14th-century Sienese tradition, is characterized by its depth and its ability to represent figures and scenes in three dimensions; is characterized by a Gothic-Romanesque style, with soaring figures, ornate clothing and a strong use of symbolism. Our high relief depicts a half-length woman put in three-quarters: on her head one can still see a crown as well as the typical robes of noblewomen. It could have been a St. Catherine of Alexandria. Traces of polychromy are still visible on the robes. It was certainly part of a set of tiles later dismembered: the edges were finished at a later time. The material belongs to that group of "colored marbles" that were quarried in the area known as the "Montagnola Senese," a limestone massif a few kilometers from the city: it is the white-gray shade, used in the parish churches of the Montagnola Senese (11th century) and then in the city of Siena itself (from the 14th century) both as building stone and in works of art, later replaced by Apuan marbles because they are more resistant to weathering.
