Within the Christian tradition and the rite known as Eucharist or Holy Communion, a tabernacle or sacrament house is a fixed, locked box in which the Eucharist (consecrated communion hosts) is stored as part of the "reserved sacrament" rite. A container for the same purpose, which is set directly into a wall, such as the present piece, is also known as an 'aumbry'. As the storage place for the Body of Christ, notable are the Annunciation figures flanking the opening, which is crowned by the Holy Spirit, both serving as a reference to the Immaculate Conception. The thistles to the left are a symbol of Christ and his Passion, the lilies to the right are a symbol of the Virgin Mary and her Immaculate Conception. This impressive Italian Renaissance piece is dated ‘1537’, most likely the date of the consecration of the sacrament altar.
