Sculpture of Lion "Marzocco" Green Marble Grand Tour Italian Florence 20th

after 1900

About the Item

Carved in the green marble know as verde prato, by a Florentine sculptor of the XX century this grand tour version of the Leone "Marzocco" is an exquisite example of elegance and heritage. The Marzocco is the heraldic lion symbol of Florence and was apparently the first secular public sculpture commissioned by the Republic of Florence in the late 14th century. The lion was located in the heart of the city, in Piazza della Signoria, at the end of the platform attached to Palazzo Vecchio, called the ringhiera, from which orators traditionally addressed the crowd. This is now lost, having been transformed by time into an unrecognizable mass of stone. The best known rendition is by Donatello, made in 1418–20. Donatello’s Marzocco was placed in the Piazza della Signoria in 1812, but in 1885 it was moved to the Bargello, also known as the Palazzo del Bargello or Palazzo del Popolo ("Palace of the People"), is a former public building and police headquarters, later a prison, in Florence, Italy. Mostly built in the 13th century, since 1865 it has housed the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, a national art museum. The Grand Tour was the principally 17th- to early 19th-century custom of a traditional trip through Europe, with Italy as a key destination, undertaken by upper-class young European men of sufficient means and rank (typically accompanied by a tutor or family member) when they had come of age (about 21 years old). The custom—which flourished from about 1660 until the advent of large-scale rail transport in the 1840s and was associated with a standard itinerary—served as an educational rite of passage. Though it was primarily associated with the British nobility and wealthy landed gentry.
