About the Item
"I started creating fingerprinted pinned books after seeing a photo of Americans being lynched in the south popped up in my social media feed. I was shocked and horrified to see it. I could hear Billi Holiday’s Strange Fruit playing in my mind- How could I honor the peoples whose lives and stories had been cut short by this horrific act of hatred? I decided to create fingerprint pinned books honoring those whose lives has been taken, stories silenced and those who had been denied for so long, the right to read and learn and share their stories and histories.
I started pinning books that failed to include stories or images of Black BIPOC Americans or women. I wanted to create an exhibit centering banned books after reading Susan Abulhawa’s Against the Loveless World. Rutgers University banned it from its curriculum due to college campus protests against military aid and support of the US to aid the Israeli war efforts against Gaza- these protests that were happening on campuses throughout the nation.
I started researching banned books being which revealed that in 2023, most of these challenges to books in over 100 school districts were made by 11 people. The majority of the challenges went to Black/ BIPOC and gay authors. It is these authors I chose to center in this exhibit – this decision also aligned with the authors I started reading upon moving to NYC in the 1985.
I chose page spreads fingerprint pin with care- I wanted to highlight the humanity of each character- even the ones that were difficult to love-And I wanted each adorned page to include a shared interaction- The sum of who we can be together. As to affixing pins- there are two ways I approached the pinning of the book. If it was by a European or American male author, I pinned the words. If the novel was written by a Black BIPOC writer, I pinned the white space between words and sentences. I did the same for women writers= pinning the space between." -Valerie Huhn
