About the Item
People have used fingerprints for mark-making since the earliest recorded days of civilization. Yet fingerprints today are far more likely to be used for marking others than for stamping a claim of ownership or creation. They are most widely employed by the police and forensic labs, banking institutions, and government health services. Of course, interpreting these prints is an art. And for all their apparent individual information, fingerprints tell us nothing about age, race, income, or anything else about a person that can be used for enforcing social constructs that define categories of oppression.
Where fingerprints were once used as a symbolic action of pride, they have now become a passive action—we are fingerprinted. I am interested in bringing humanity back to the fingerprint—whether in obsessive repetitious patterns or the intimate setting of a personal bureau that houses our second skin.
The fingerprint work in this series is created with my right index finger. Each print is catalogued with the date it was created beneath it. The work revolves around identity—identifying and categorizing people into groups and subgroups within society. It is the notion of a fixed self or our identification of others that I am challenging using color, shape, and pressure of every print I leave behind.

View AllMedium Abstract Sculpture: 'Accepting'
By Eileen Braun
Located in New York, NY
During the COVID-19 lockdown, many faced swirling negative thoughts….. Atlanta sculptor, Eileen Braun, worked through the lockdown challenge and re-channeled that negative energy into her hands. As her hands cradled and examined the materials, her mind welcomed being in the moment and being grateful for what was. Those positive thoughts became her mantra while creating. Accepting change without judgement. On occasion, accepting the days that didn’t change, while the materials spoke anew.
She explains that “the resulting forms display my interwoven emotions: quiet, complex, absorbed, relaxed, serious, playful, flirtatious, mothering, smothering and ultimately, joyful.”
Her installation, OPEN SPACES: Espaces Ouverts, is a profusion of forms suspended in our two front facing plaza windows. As they float, sight lines...

Sculpture; 'Portal'
By Kelly Bugden + Van Wifvat
Located in New York, NY
The artistic collaboration of Kelly Bugden + Van Wifvat has produced a thought-provoking body of sculptures, paintings, and constructions. Nature, childhood memories, and everyday archetypes take shape in unexpected combinations of materials. The works emerged as the tactile and visual senses channeled the ritualistic power and materiality of selected artifacts. The resulting objects exist in a space between what they were originally and what they could become. A wheel, for example, is distorted as if seen through a prism. Their collaboration grew out of years of shaping materials into one-of-a-kind objects. Intuitively, the process of creating with their hands took an inward turn. Prism is a travelogue through memories and dreams, yielding abstract forms that capture moments of transformation.
Van Wifvat grew up with eight siblings and studied sculpture and environmental design in Minneapolis at MCAD. In 1979, he opened a storefront art gallery to promote the work of local artists. The space featured printed materials—art books, periodicals, fanzines, and postcard’s. Wifvat moved to New York in 1983 to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology and Parsons. In 1987, he co-founded Van Gregory & Norton design studio, specializing in convex mirrors and curtain hardware...
