Van den Bossche Domien
Large Art Nouveau Sculpture Terracotta Group "The Bacchante"

circa 1890

About the Item

"The Bacchante," an imposing terracotta group bearing the signature of Domien van den Bossche. Late 19th century. Probably inspired by Carrier Belleuse's "The Bacchante" group of 1863, this terracotta depicts a young nymph dancing to the sound of castanets around the herm of a satyr. The group already shows traces of Art Nouveau, particularly in the smiling, expressive face of the young nymph and the emphasis on her movement. In perfect condition, never underwent restoration. He was a pupil of Louis Van Biesbroeck, Theodore Canneel and Pierre De Vigne-Quyo.He also collaborated regularly with architect Jacob Semey. He made exceptional classical sculptures, both for interior and exterior, for the main buildings of Ghent University: the pediment of the facade, allegorical figures for niches, as well as all kinds of decorative ornaments of his own invention. His are the large bronze groups that decorate the slaughterhouses in Lille. Van Den Bossche's funerary sculptures in East Flanders are undoubtedly excellent examples of his best work. The medal of honor he created for Dr. Victor Deneffe is on display at the Ghent City Museum.
