About the Item
"Bust of a Woman", is a bronze sculpture by the Mexican artist, Victor Salmones. This sophisticated piece has an aura of repose and quiet enhanced by the smooth beautiful patina surface. It is a fully realized torso with her head twisted to one side. This sculpture is signed and P/A representing the artist proof of the series edition of 10.
He attended the Mexican National Institute of Fine Arts where he studied under the famous Bauhaus master Otto Hoffman who took Salmones under his wing, and offered him an apprenticeship. Hoffman's encouragement led to the opening of Victor's own sculpture workshop in Cuernavaca in 1966.
In 1967, Salmones' fluid bronze Adam was awarded first prize at the Biennale Exposition of the National Museum of Modern Art. His work continued to win the highest critical acclaim at subsequent Biennale expositions, and in 1971, over hundreds of entries, his life-size bronze Narcissus was honored with first place in the national art competition juried by Harry Greer of the New York's Frick Museum and Charles Nagle of the Smithsonian.
This sculpture is a landmark of Salmones' adopted city, Narcissus surveys the port from a rock in Acapulco Bay. Victor Salmones gained steadily in recognition internationally. He was honored with one man shows throughout the world. Public and private collections in some thirty-eight countries have collected and showcased his sculpture. Victor Salmones continued sculpting until his untimely death in 1989. He worked principally in bronze, using the centuries-old lost wax method of casting. Each of his sculptures was cast in a numbered series of ten.

Victor Salmones
Victor Salmones, born in 1937, was a famous sculptor living and working in Mexico during his lifetime. His sculptures won him universal acclaim and are held in the collections of museums, corporations, cities, universities and private collectors in some 30 countries. During his career, he was highly sought after and increasingly involved in the execution of commissions for major public works around the world. Salmones developed his love and talent for creating sculptures by working with clay in high school. He attended the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes where he was an apprentice to the Bauhaus master, Hoffman. He was trained to use the age-old lost wax method of casting and worked principally in bronze. His work explores styles that are both abstract and figurative and the grace and spirit inherent in his work endow his bronzes with a transcendent vitality. The international acceptance of Salmones’s sculpture attests not only to his artistic mastery of the medium but to the universal appeal of the themes that inspire his work which was love, compassion and humanity. Salmones died in 1989.
