About the Item
Head of a warrior.
From the Totonaca culture (state of Veracruz) created about 1982.
Modern Pre Columbian style clay, terracotta sculpture artist signed on the right bottom.
Walter Bastianetto is an Italian born sculptor who moved to Mexico in the 1970s and resided there. Well-known artist for his original clay, terracotta and bronze sculptures inspired by Mexico's Pre Columbian life, mythology, and religion.
Walter Bastianetto, was born in Venice Italy. He graduated from the Ca' Foscari University of Architecture in Venice. He participated in various art and sculpture workshops in his native country and in Mexico.
He has exhibited his sculptural work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Europe, USA, and Mexico. He undertook his first trip to Mexico in 1970. The ancient cultures of this country captivate his spirit to such a degree that he decides to fully immerse himself in its cosmogony, dazzled mainly by the Aztec and Mayan culture. His work is lost in the labyrinth of life, mythology and pre-Hispanic religion to capture the essence of his worldview and allows contemporary characters and stories trapped in terracotta, resin and bronze, come to life. It transports us to the life that the Aztecs, the Mayans and other groups had, it shows us their customs and traditions, it shows the type of clothing they had, the typical features on their faces, the love for nature and its animals, in short , is an artist who has investigated and has interpreted his feelings about this culture in his sculptures.
Artist Statement:
“As an artist I am simply a simplifier of the explanation of a myth of the past and I try to capture and interpret human nature with divine exaltations, I try to make the ancestral spirit and matter stop with the language of art.”
