About the Item
Prometheus Freed is a sculpture by Guatemalan artist Walter Peter Brenner.
Dimensions are 50 x 30 x 16 cm (19.7 x 11.8 x 6.3 in). This artwork is signed and numbered.
Prometheus holds a central place among the Titans in Greek mythology, revered for gifting humanity with the power of thought. Moved by compassion for humans, who lacked the ability to reason, he stole the fire of reason from Mount Olympus and gave it to mankind. As punishment for this act of defiance, Zeus condemned Prometheus to eternal suffering in exile on a rocky island. Yet Zeus offered a condition for his release: Prometheus would be freed if he returned the fire of reason and revealed the secret of who would one day overthrow Zeus. Despite enduring unbearable physical torment, Prometheus never surrenders—remaining steadfast in his principles and unwavering in his loyalty to truth.
Prometheus Freed pays homage to the freedom attained through perseverance and fidelity to one's values. The sculpture stands as a powerful symbol of integrity and the resilience of the human spirit. Much like Prometheus’ exile on a remote rock, the artwork is installed on the Pacific coast of Guatemala, where the constant rhythm of crashing waves echoes the theme of enduring struggle.

Walter Peter Brenner
The beauty and the grandeur of human form are at the heart of Walter Peter Brenner’s work. The sculptor has for 17 years been developing works which go against the dogmas of his time and which exalt, by their nobility, an heroic sense of life. In his sculptures there are references to antiquity, be it in the themes (Prometheus, Hercules, Atlas...) or in the bodies of his works (athletic, powerful, noble). The artist has created several monumental commissions for private and public spaces, the best known of which is the 10-metre-high terracotta sculpture «The Colossus of Inmaco», exhibited in Guatemala City. “Romantic heroism is what really represents my work. A heroic sense of life, a sense that man is capable of shaping and modelling his own destiny. A sense of hope.’’
