About the Item
"On the Surface in the Shallows" by Heather Binder is a contemporary wood fired ceramic sculpture depicting the serene motion of leaves and waves as interpreted by the artist. This 22.5 x 8 x 8 inch sculpture, in a variety of natural tones of light blue and deep brown hues, captures the warmth of flame and fire of the 144 hour anagama wood firing process, but also the movement of life on the surface of cool waters as we watch it float along the surface of a river.
Heather Binder is a ceramic artist and dedicated arts educator who is fascinated by patterns and geometries found in places most people pass by without noticing. Her upbringing in Rhode Island can be recognized as a significant reference for her sculptures. She holds a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University, and an MFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Heather has taught art and ceramics in public schools for more than 30 years and is currently is a visiting critic at the Rhode Island School of Design. Heather prefers alternate atmospheres for her work and primarily fires with Chris Gustin in his Japanese style anagama wood kiln. She has been awarded fellowships and residencies from Arrowmont School for Arts and Crafts, Touchstone Center for Craft and the Pocosin Art and Craft School. Heather Binder’s work can be found in galleries, retail shops, restaurants and private collections around the world.

Ceramic abstract sculpture: 'Seeking the Way'
By Tony Moore
Located in New York, NY
My work is concerned with the relationship of humanity and nature. I conceive of an expanded concept of “Nature” as embodying all existence, both the seen and unseen, socio-political events, daily occurrences, as well as private intuitions that are made concrete through creative action. My objects are places of remembrance where multiplicities of associations take place. Most recently these have been concerned with issues of the human condition.
“In recent ceramic Fire Paintings and Sculptures abstracted figures, made from cut twigs, are impressed into wet clay. As I investigated, the figures kept running, fleeing, tumbling, searching, moving away from and towards something else. They moved across landscapes, towards glowing buildings/edifices, systemized structures/societies, which both beckoned them and somehow dominated them. The figures were present, yet also in spirit form, floating and dissolving in diaphanous light and shimmering waters. Twigs became, fathers, mothers and children. They became surrogates, rather like a small child’s dolls, playing out a deeply psychological fiction of desperately moving toward “something”. Something hopeful, yet presently out of reach. Something eternally becoming …”
